Many people are running into this Memory Size Exhausted Error when attempting to upgrade their WordPress website to version 3.0. It is caused by a memory limitation on their site as to the amount of memory that can be used. Many sites are set up with a 32-megabyte limit. Version 3.0 now includes the functionality that was once in WordPress MU as well as the new default theme. All together it exceeds the 32 Mb limit.

The easiest solution is to install a plug-in called Memory Bump. While this plug-in is active you can set your memory limit as high as 256 Mb. Without this plug-in you would be forced to hand-edit configuration files on your site. If the plug-in does not work for you then you are up against a hosting service defined limit and you will need to contact them to get the issue resolved.
